Youth & Community Projects

I have a strong commitment to using the performing arts as a means by which people can be engaged most effectively in a variety of contexts. I have often described myself as‘a storyteller who writes tunes’ and have entered into a number of projects in that role, finding ways to collect the stories of individuals and communities and then presenting these stories back using song and script.

My ten year career as a Secondary school teacher and the ongoing connection with children and young people in a variety of contexts have given me particular insight and capacity for engaging the imaginations and commitment of young people in developing original productions that reflect their interests and extend them creatively.

By reflecting and voicing subject matter ranging from the intensive personal to the universal I have been able to work within communities and groups to create exciting new works. The innovative productions that have resulted from these projects have found an international audience.

Fairfax Festival Wrap
Saturday, 27 January 2007

After being involved for nine years as initially artist in residence and later artistic coordinator of the George Fairfax Memorial Schools Drama Festival I announced my ‘retirement’ from the event, having seen it through to its tenth anniversary.

This year was the most successful, with 12 schools, 23 entries and 275 students involved. During my time with the Fairfax Festival I drove over 70,000 km, ran over 300 hundred workshops and assisted with the development of over 100 performances.

While professional commitments have made it increasingly difficult to be part of the festival I have been immensely gratified that my commitment to working with students in more isolated regions has had such great results. I have made many friends of the teachers and other people in the region and look forward to maintaining those links and my support of the festival into the future.
