Promotional Postcard Commissioned by the Sunrise21 Artist in Industry project, Water Into Wine is a song cycle linked by dramatic text that presents snapshots of the stories taken from interviews with and research of the horticultural farmers or ‘blockies’ of the Sunraysia district (north-west Victoria).
A series of impressions rather than a narrative, this production which premiered at the Mildura/Wentworth Arts Festival 2000 was written and directed by Craig Christie and featured as the original cast Shirley Bowie, Jesse Curran, Brendan Hanson and Helen Healy (who all live in or are from the area) and the Silverwater Choir comprising of women from this region.
Water Into Wine was selected by the organization Magnormos for the most recent of its theatre readings program in which new or less well known musicals are given a rehearsed public reading. The show was presented October 14 – 16 at Theatreworks starring Judith Roberts, Kristen Keam, Sarah Hamilton and Ian Sandercoe with musical direction by Vicki Jacobs.
The enormously enthusiastic response to the piece has given rise to a number of exciting possibilities for the future of Water Into Wine. More details about the presentation can be found at www.magnormos.com
